Sažetak
Background and Objectives. A couple of recent large-scale epidemiological studies pointed to a surprisingly high prevalence of erectile dysfunction among young men (Mialon et al., 2012 ; Martins, 2010). It has been suggested that this “epidemic” is explained by excessive online pornography use. Similar concerns have been raised in response to anecdotal evidence of partnered sexual desire deficit. To empirically assess these claims, which reverberate in recent calls for systematic regulation of pornography, we explored: if pornography use is associated with male and female sexual dysfunctions (SD) ; if an increased frequency of pornography use is associated with SD ; and if the association between pornography use and sexual functioning is moderated by pornography genre (mainstream vs. specific/paraphilic contents). Method. Participants were recruited through Facebook and banners posted on several news and dating websites. In total, 4, 597 were included in the analyses (18-60 yrs ; mean age=31.1 ; 56.5% women). 56.3% reported college education and 38.4% were married/cohabitating. Abridged version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) and a question on the frequency of delayed ejaculation measured male SD, while a validated 6-item version of the Female Sexual Function Index measured female SD. An additional item indicating a recent decreased interest in partnered sex was applied to both men and women. Frequency of pornography use in the past 12 months, the time spent on pornography use in a typical day within that period, and their interaction indicated the intensity of pornography use. Results. Tested in different ways, the association between pornography use and SD was consistently non-significant among both men and women. When compared to participants who reported that their pornography use in the past 12 months either decreased or remained unchanged, men who increased their pornography use did not report a significantly higher prevalence of SD. However, increased pornography use was slightly but significantly associated with decreased interest for partnered sex (Cramer’s V=.12, p<.001) and more prevalent SD (Cramer’s V=.08, p<.05) among women. We found no evidence of the role of pornography genre in female SD. Reporting a preference for specific pornographic genres were significantly associated with erectile (Cramer’s V=.15, p<.001) but not ejaculatory or desire-related male SD. Conclusion. In contrast to raising public concerns, mainstream pornography use and its dynamics do not seem to be a risk factor for male sexual health disturbances. Causality-wise, the observed association between an increased frequency of pornography use and female SD could run in either direction.
