Sažetak
The contemporary global culture has been supported by mass-media development, by structural informatization and the promotion of international interactiveness and has thus considerably changed the status of national languages: the English language has become fundamental source of new terminology, new technologies and new specialties and therefore the communication means of strategic interest. While taking into account several linguists' positions, this paper has set out to look into the social-cultural aspects of penetration of foreign lexis and phrases into the Croatian oral language practice and in time into the Croatian language standard. Though this phenomenon is the cause of linguistic isolationism within certain academic groups, the economy of widespread communication in English makes the consequent absorption of English into national lexical bodies completely obvious. This research intends to explore the phenomenon of other foreign languages assimilation into the Crotian lexical body ; therefore, the names of dishes in one hundred menues of Croatian restaurants has been researched in order to establish the level of assimilation of foreign words and expressions into the gastronomic terminology of Croatian language area. Desk research as well as field research methods have been used and the latter has applied the opinion questionnaire to the student population with hospitality specialty curriculum. The purpose of providing the analysis of the process of assimilation of foreign words and expressions into the body of Croatian gastronomic terminology is also to give contribution to the discussions on sustainable language policies. Although the reception of common (linguistic) currency may raise concerrns for the survival of the national cultural entities and plentitude of diversity in the context of global market competition, it is at the same time the only logical move which then, along with some foreseeable concessions, guaranties the added value. The changes which consequently emerge within the micro-sphere of national languages, the Croatian language also, are instances of natural transition at the end of which only the fittest would survive in the arena of global lexical market.
