Sažetak
Southern Croatia is distinguished by an extensive region of both low and high Dinaric karst, which stretches almost uninterruptedly for almost 600 km in length and 90-100 km in breadth, parallel to the Adriatic coast. It features many canyons, pits, caves and underground rivers and lakes which are characterized by very stable ecological conditions. The region has a great wealth of almost 700 subterranean taxons identified to date (ssp. + sspp) (1, 2). During the summer of 1994, during exploration of Lukina jama (pit) in the northern part of the Dinaric karst (Velebit), one of the surprises was the discovery of a new species of leech, Croatobranchus mestrovi sp. n., the characteristics of which differ considerably from those of all known European species.
