Sažetak
The author focuses on a controversial dramatic text "Svrha od slobode" ("The Purpose of Freedom" or "The End of Freedom") written by Ivan Kušan (b. 1933) in the early 1970 ; the title of the play has sometimes been translated as "The Purpose of Freedom", but alternatively also as "The End of Freedom" (according to the meaning of the Croatian word "svrha"/"svarha" - meaning "end"). The play epitomizes a literary work which can fit into various periods and places due to the complexity of its language and the whole array of (political) connotations. Its simultaneity reverberates through different periods in Croatian history. There were a few performances in 1971 after which Miro Međimorec's staging of Kušan's play was forbidden by the state authorities. That proves that "The End of Freedom" has actually been - in a way - the end of theatre. The way in which the audience reacts to the theatre has always displayed their response to current social phenomena, political circumstances and ruling ideology. Apart from Kušan's text, the autor Peričić accounts for several examples of Croatian political and the so-called subversive plays from the end of the sixties to the beginning of the eighties of the 20th century. She explores their "non-simultaneous simultaneity" and potential that may be actualized and applied to reality and theatre in Croatia at the turn of the centuries (the 20th and 21st century).
