Sažetak
A wide variety of organic chemicals can spontaneously form peroxides. Process is described as free radical reaction of hydrocarbon with molecular oxygen in a process of autoxidation. For this reason, peroxide number was introduced as criteria for monitoring peroxides in solvents. The peroxide number is defined as the amount of peroxide oxygen per 1 kilogram of solvent. In literature it is well known that 2-propanol can form peroxides (up to 4.2 %) by contact with air during long-term storage. During preparation of mesylate salt of piperazine derivative in 2-propanol/acetone mixture, N-oxide formation was observed (Figure 1.) It was determined that elevated peroxide number of 2-propanol was responsible for N-oxide formation. In this research, effect of 2-propanol peroxide number on N-oxide formation was studied.
