Sažetak
One of the most important problems for romanticism is the issue of language. Observing romanticism’s relationship to language reveals two trends. The first trend was focused on the power of language, and the second endorsed the idea of its powerlessness, e.g. in the relation to the representation of nature, or the transcendental worlds. The first case (emphasis on the power of language) is characteristic of the so-called small languages which were under the pressure of different adverse historical, political and social circumstances during their standardization. The Croatian language should be ranked to this type of languages. On the other hand, the "powerful" type of languages, such as Russian, which developed without external pressures, can afford to admit its "powerlessness". However, this powerlessness is in fact the epitome of a real creative force. This paradoxallity, or transparadoxallity, is a characteristic technique used in the poetry of Petar Preradovic, Vasily Zhukovsky, Afanasy Fet and Fyodor Tyutchev.
