Sažetak
The archaeological literature often raises the question of the association between the position of the forearms and its affiliation with a particular chronological period Thus, graves in which deceased were buried with forearms extended along the body were considered older than the ones in which the hands of the deceased were laid on the abdomen or crossed at the chest. However, as early as in 1954, Zdenek Vaňa noticed that there was a precisely opposite situation in certain early medieval cemeteries originating from the period from 10th to 12th century, and that the forearm position could not be the only chronological determinant for dating graves. Forearms laid on the abdomen, crossed at the chest or bent towards shoulders have been recorded in cemeteries parallel with the cases where they were extended along the body or laid on the pelvis. The parallel appearance of different forearm positions is also present in late medieval and early modern cemeteries throughout central Europe.
