Sažetak
Cadmium (Cd) contamination is a serious environmental problem that limits crop production and threatens human health through the food chain. It is recognized as an extremely significant pollutant. Aim of this study was survey of Cd status in leaf of maize and grain of maize and wheat as affected by liming and testing hereditary effects on leaf- Cd in maize. Soil pollutions by Cd in the eastern Croatia is low, from 0.16 to 0.40 mg of total Cd/kg. The analyzed 143 soils are clean unpolluted and well below limits for agriculture considering total concentrations of Cd. The significantly higher concentrations were found in kitchen gardens, especially in more urban localities in Osijek comparing kitchen garden in smaller cities. As affected by liming leaf-Cd in maize drastically decreased (0.165 and 0.08 mg Cd/kg, for the control and limed treatments, respectively). Grain-Cd concentrations in maize and wheat were considerably lower (0.02 mg and 0.08 Cd mg/kg, respectively) and independent on liming. Also, by liming was reduced tobacco leaf-Cd (3.6 and 2.0 mg Cd/kg, respectively). Beside environmental factors, heredity has important role in Cd status in plants. Mean concentrations of Cd in maize leaves of 20 hybrids were 0.14 mg Cd/kg. Low Cd was found in six hybrids (mean 0.09 mg Cd/kg), while in three hybrids were the higher (mean 0.200 mg Cd/kg, but acceptable with aspect of plant and animal health. In the other study, leaf-Cd in maize populations was significantly affected by the genotype (from 0.1 to 1.7 mg Cd/kg).
