Sažetak
The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of atopy and bronchoconstriction in athletes. We have tested 37 athletes – rowers (including the Olympic bronze medal rowing eight from Sydney), age 17.2 ± 2.9 (36 male, 1 female, range 13-28 years), height 183.6 ± 7.1 cm, weight 77.6 ± 10.6 kg, and we found: positive allergy history: 6 (16%), and positive skin prick test to seasonal allergens: 4 (11%) athletes. MV ± SD (%) Pathologic (<80%) BT positive PEF 621 ± 70 FVC 114 ± 13 0 1 (2, 7%) FEV1 114 ± 12 0 4 (11%) FEV1/FVC% 102 ± 10 0 FEF75 109 ± 24 4 (11%) 5 (13, 5%) FEF50 109 ± 28 3 (8%) 5 (13, 5%) FEF25 110 ± 46 9 (24%) 3 (8%) Peak expiratory flow (PEF, measured by peak flow meter): normal 576 ± 38 l/min, according to Gregg I. et al. Brit Med J 1989 ; 298: 1068-70 ; Spirometry parameters and flow-volume curve according to predicted values of Cotes ; Bronchodilator test (BT): positive >12% (according to Quanjer, Ph. H. et al. Eur Respir J 1993 ; 6, Suppl. 16: 5-40). Conclusion: 16% of athletes have positive allergy history, 11% positive skin prick test to seasonal allergens and 24% bronchoconstriction of small airways. Early diagnosis and adequate treatment of these underestimated conditions improve quality of life and sport results.
