Sažetak
This paper seeks to determine since when sport has been a tourist draw on the Croatian side of the Adriatic Sea. The research was conducted using tourism, architectural and sports magazines from the late 19th and early 20th century. Although sport was not a professional undertaking as it is today, data indicate that in the early 20th century Adriatic Croatia, sport was connected with tourism in several ways, namely as an additional thing to do at destination, through sport schools and various competitions. A variety of sports facilities was built for tourism purposes: tennis courts, golf courses, (indoor and outdoor) swimming pools, gyms, polo fields and facilities and hiking trails. Exclusive tourist destinations in Croatia, such as the Brijuni Islands and the town of Opatija, organized international sports competitions in sailing, rowing, swimming, tennis, golf and polo, and even car races. Due to the abundant fauna, hunting was an integral part of sport and tourism. From the beginning of the 20th century, both men and women engaged in sports. Examples include the famous sailor from Vienna, Marianne Triebisch-Stein, who sailed the Adriatic in 1913 and the tennis star Baroness von Bornemisza who played in Opatija. It is interesting to note that the Croatian Cycling Federation was founded in 1894 and that German tourists cycled around the Croatian Adriatic region already in 1903. As the share of sport activities in the tourism offer increased, authorities began discussing the introduction of taxes on tickets for sporting events. The main part of the presentation consists of presenting the most significant examples of sports facilities and sporting competitions with an impact on the development of tourism. Despite the fact that tourism on the Croatian Adriatic coast did not compare to tourism in France or Switzerland, neither in terms of tourist arrivals nor in terms of the level of comfort, it can be concluded that sport played an important role in tourism in the early 20th century.
