Sažetak
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are arthrogenic and myogenic disorders in the area of temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and/or masticatory muscles. TMDs have a greater frequency in females - our open longitudinal study carried out from 2001 to 2012 confirmed this epidemiological data, that TMDs are up to four times more frequent. Their main clinical characteristic is musculoskeletal pain and they are one of the most common causes of pain in the stomatognathous system. Magnetic resonance imaging was used as a 'gold standard' tool for diagnosing the intra- articular TMD. Prevalence of clinical symptoms in adult population ranges from 12 - 42.7% and the need for treatment is at 3-9%. Etiopathogenesis of TMD has not been entirely explained. TMD is characterized by a multifactorial etiology, with a number of mutually interacting physical and psychosocial factors. Also, TMD constitutes the most common cause of nondental, musculoskeletal pain in the orofacial region. The biopsychosocial conceptualization of the pain experience is found in the close connection between pain and psychosocial factors.
