Sažetak
The genetic improvement of soybean, based on conventional breeding strategies, contributes to advances in production and food processing industry by developing high-yielding and high-quality varieties. Breeding programs are primarily aimed to the yield increasing, but despite its inherent high nutritional value, the valuable phytochemicals of soybean seed have been a focus of breeding. The objective of this study was to evaluate genetic advance in protein and oil quantity for soybean grown in Croatia. The research was conducted at location Osijek (eastern Croatia) from 2008 to 2012. Experimental material consisted of the three sets of soybean genotypes (elite lines and standards), depending of maturity group (MG): 00, 0 and I. Total number of tested genotypes was 156, as follows: 22, 61, 73 genotypes into MG 00, 0 and I. Tested elite lines and standards (commercial varieties) developed at the Agricultural Institute Osijek (Croatia). Field experiments were set as a randomized complete block design with four replications. Protein and oil content in seed were measured from seed sample per plot by Infratec 1241 Grain Analyzer and expressed in percentage of absolute dry matter of seed. On average, protein content was 40.12%, 40.68%, 42.20% at elite lines and 37.88%, 38.76%, 40.14% at standards. The average value for oil content was 22.87%, 22.43%, 21.80% for lines and 21.56%, 21.22%, 20.65% for standards. Analyzed data for level and stability of protein and oil indicated on achieved genetic advance in these traits in MGs which are suitable for growing in area of southeast Europe. High-quality varieties will contribute to production of safe product high nutritive and functional value for consumers.
