Sažetak
Phytopathogenic fungi are the main plant pathogens all over the world and they cause significant quantity and quality losses in econonomically important crops. Plant essential oils are multicomponent, volatile and aromatic liquids extracted from numerous plants and they play an important role in plant defense because they often possess antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and insecticide properties. Essential oils inhibit fungal growth, sporulation and germ tube elongation of many plant pathogens. Sometimes, the bioactivities of them are closely related with the activity of the main components of the oils. On the other hand, in large number of cases the antimicrobial activity results from the complex interaction between the different compounds like esters, ethers, phenols, aldehydes, alcohols and ketones. Antifungal effect of the essential oils depends on the application method, temperature, water activity, dose and type of essential oil and pathogen species as well as some of their interactions. They are promising natural source of antifungal compounds the use of essential oils and their compounds could be important source for the development of new fungicides.
