Sažetak
Our recent discovery of the lateralized and most protracted development of subputaminal division of the human basal forebrain, together with its ascending projection towards cortical speech area, suggests its possible roles in pathogenesis of many neurological, neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, particularly primary progressive aphasia (Mesulam's disease), Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. After presenting the in vivo imaging findings and postmortem evaluation of the basal forebrain of three patients with primary progressive aphasia and three normal controls, the role of the subputaminal nucleus in etiopathogenesis of primary progressive aphasia was proposed.
