Sažetak
The increased percentage of elderly people in general population is follovved by increased number of people with Alzheimer's dementia (AD) and their need for psychiatric treatment. The patients with AD, in advanced stages of disease, are also candidates for palliative care. Presentsituation: In Croatia there are several pyschogeriatrics wards in the large psychiatric hospitals with nearby 500 beds. The first such unit was organized in Psychiatric Hospital Vrapce, Zagreb in 1959, because it was obvious that older people with schizophrenia had different needs than younger. During the last decades the activities of services reoriented. mostly to the patients older than 65years who are suffering from AD and other-dementias. Every year about 800 patients are hospitalized in University Psychiatric Hospital Vrapce on this Ward. Despite the mortality varies between approximately 35-40% per year, the specialized palliative care vvards for people with AD are still not organized. Future demands: As population gets older the need of psychiatric care for geriatric patients vvill increase, as well as the need of 30-40% of these patients for palliative care. The reorganization of psychiatric hospitals, in perspectives of organization of psychiatric services in community (reduction in number of psychiatric beds) may create the space for the establishment of units specialized for palliative medicine specialized for people vvith dementia. These units may be organized independently from psychiatric hospitals or be a part of current psychogeriatric vvards. In such organization of palliative care for people vvith AD the psychiatrists should be a member of multidisciplinary team.
