Sažetak
While effects of the atmospheric boundary layer flow on engineering infrastructure are more or less known, strong downslope windstorms create considerable difficulties for vehicles, structures and human activities in general. Downslope winds (also called fall winds) blowing down the mountain slopes develop as a results of a local meteorological situation and terrain topography, whereas they can sometimes reach hurricane speeds. In this lecture, basic principles of the experimental small-scale simulation of the ‘classical’ atmospheric boundary layer and gusty downslope winds will be reported. Some representative wind-tunnel results on downslope wind gusting of vehicles will be presented, as well as the design of roadway wind barriers to protect vehicles of adverse wind effects, and wind characteristics around wind turbines built in the mountainous terrain.
