Sažetak
The administration of probiotics during the perinatal period is a new area of research on the role of probiotics in maternal and child health. Studies have been shown that the use of probiotics during pregnancy may have an important role in maintaining glucose homeostasis and in the prevention of gestational diabetes. Positive effects of perinatal probiotic administration for the prevention of atopic sensitization and atopic eczema in children were also found. Some potential benefits of probiotic administration to pregnant women include the reduction in the risk for large for gestational age infant births. Therefore, the use of probiotics in the perinatal period in order to modulate the gut microbiota composition and to support normal development of the metabolic and immune system, may be a possible dietary strategy to prevent later health problems such as allergy, diabetes and obesity.
