Sažetak
The transition process in Croatia and long-lasting economic recession are responsible for difficult financing of the health care system. Medicines play a significant role in the structure of the overall healthcare expenses accounting for about 17-19%. Despite the fact that the average annual per capita consumption of medicines is below USD 100, a systemic rationalization in pharmacotherapy is necessary, A concept of the national drug policy strategy until 2005 has been designed and adjusted to the economic situation and healthcare needs. The set guideline involve an active role of the population in self-care and adequate self-medication, realistic and enforceable drug legislation, social and ethical responsibility of healthcare professionals, active engagement of all media in the promotion of rational drug . Croatian pharmacy practice which is largely privatized plays a positive and important role in the implementation of the defined drug policy. It refers to systematic monitoring and evaluation according to the international drug consumption standards, prevention of errors in prescribing and medication, training in correct drug application, participation in designing guidelines in prescribing. Undertaken activities will ensure a high quality and professionally justified drug therapy in 2001 saving about 5-7% of the average drug expenses in Croatia.
