Sažetak
Preconditions for gradual enlargement of the EU have been created. The EU shuold be in position to adhere new memebers as from the end of 2002. Among CEECs Hungary and Estonia should be in position to enter the EU. Enlargement will impact the countries involved, but also the neighbouring countries and regions. Positive effects can be expected from implementation of new agreements (i.e. SAA). Negative effects are also possible, among which trade diversion (in sensitive sectors) is most likely to happen. WHich effects will prevali depends to the great extent onpreparedness of country itself and its will to co-operatie with neighbouring partners. Preliminary analyses of Croatian present trade links show that positive impacts of enlargement can be expected by Croatian producers (exporters to the EU) of plastics and plastic products, while trade diversion effects can prevail for producers of machinery and mechanical appliances. However, the effects of enlargement will depend on its timing and success of reforms conducted till then. The adjustment to the enlarged EU comprises the transition and integration specific measures, that should be introduced at local, regional and/or European level.
