Sažetak
Nanotechnology and nanomaterials have become the “hot” topics in last decades among researchers. The reason for nanotechnology attractiveness is in the new opportunities that this new area has brought. This paper gives a short overview of the field emergence, the basic nanotechnology terms with the focus on nanomaterials types, nanomaterials unique properties and possibilities in applications. The benefits of this booming field, on one hand, are evident in many areas including: information and communication technology, power energy, environmental engineering, chemical industry, food industry, medicine, pharmaceutical industry and cosmetics. On the other hand, the same unique properties on behalf of which are these major application areas are of major concern due to their potential toxicological effects on the human health and environment. Nanomaterials are entering the environment or the human body easily through production or waste, or through occupational exposure or usage, respectively. Probably the biggest concern of toxicologists at this point would be that potentially harmful impacts that nanomaterials have are not yet completely clarified.
