Sažetak
Water scarcity as well as a high dependence on fossil fuels is serious problems facing a lot of arid countries today. One such country is Jordan. Jordan is the World’s fourth most water deprived country with a water consumption of approximately 150 m3 per capita annually, which is well below the established water poverty line. It is also a country highly dependent on energy import. Almost 90% of the produced electricity comes from imported natural gas and the rest comes mostly from oil. It is also a country with a high but unfortunately underutilized potential for the production of electrical energy from wind and PV. The integration of desalination and energy production from renewables such as wind and PV can provide a potential solution for the water scarcity problem facing countries like Jordan and also help reduce the countries dependence on energy import and energy production from fossil fuels. The flexible nature of reverse osmosis (RO) desalination systems can help increase the penetration of intermittent renewable sources and thus help reduce CO2 emissions associated with electricity production and reduce the countries annual electrical bill. Jordan’s annual expenditure for fossil fuel exceeded 3 billion US$, which is approximately 20% of its GDP for the year 2011. This paper is a continuation of previous work which has already presented that the utilization of desalination combined with a brine operated pump hydro storage system can increase the penetration of intermittent energy sources by more than 50% in certain cases. The goal of this paper is to investigate the possibility of achieving a 100% renewable energy system by utilizing desalination and renewable energy sources, using the EnergyPLAN energy modelling tool. EnergyPLAN is capable of balancing energy demand and supply with the utilization of desalination on an hourly basis. The results of the models will be presented and discussed in this work.
