Sažetak
This paper deals with monitoring and back analyses of the multi-tiered mechanically stabilized earth wall (called Sveta Trojica) constructed in the karst region in Croatia. The Sveta Trojica Wall is one of the highest MSE walls in the world built with polyester strips as reinforcement. Because of its height and difficult subsoil conditions (flysh), the MSE wall was provided with monitoring equipment for measuring vertical and horizontal deformations of the wall. To determine the MSE wall deformability, values of material parameters were determined on the basis of site investigations and laboratory testing. These values were used for computation of settlements using the finite element code Plaxis. The settlements measured were used for carrying out back analyses in order to determine actual ground stiffness moduli. The back analyses were performed for flysch using the values for moduli of elasticity of 60, 80 and 100 MN/m2. The above moduli are from four to six times higher than those obtained in laboratory testing.
