Sažetak
Traditionally, accounts of the rise of poetic modernity at the "Renaissance" have involved methodical suppression of the continuing presence of allegory in the period's poetical thought. The paper examines alternatives to this untenable view, focusing in particular on the place of allegory in the comprehensive treatises on poetics produced by English writers between 1570 and 1630, the polemical context in which the period's poetical thought operates, and the radical reconfiguration of the allegory-modernity nexus in the work of Francis Bacon.
