Sažetak
The wild boar is the most widely distributed ungulate originating from Europe, Asia, and North Africa, has by far the largest range of all suid species which demonstrate a high ecological adaptability and have tendency of increasing. In late 20th centuries, population rapidly extended throughout the Europe, and begins to inhabit habitats where previously was not present, such for example Adriatic Islands. Therefore, in the most European countries wild boar is treated as a pest, primarily because of its negative economic impacts, crop and forest damage, and transferring diseases to livestock. Numbers of wild boars is different across countrys and regions, but the behavior is similar to the population of almost the entire territory of South-East Europe, from the Black to the Adriatic Sea, as well as in the Pannonian valley. Agricultural damage by wild boar has been reported from many countrys, and is a major concern for both agricultural and wildlife agencies at the national level. The greatest damage occurring on field crops at the time of ripening grain and fruit. For this reason, hunting unit leaseholders pay injured estimated fees in some countries, which are due to the extent of damage is very high. Approximate annual amount of accrued damages to agricultural crops is 8 mil. € in Hungary and 5 mil. € in Croatia, and have tendency of increasing annualy. The impact of wild boar damage on agriculture crops, in total, leads to conclusion that this is a major problem of this species. Concerning this problem the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture has organized Ministerial Conference this spring in Osijek with the intention of gathering potential partner countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Slovenia and Serbia) and applying for the project. The aim of this project is „With adequate policy and management of wild boars reduce damage to agriculture areas by 10%, while increasing harvesting that will be realized through hunting tourism which will also result in significant increase of consumption of high-quality meat“. Expected results are decreasing cost of damages, protect population and development hunting tourism.
