Sažetak
Since the end of the Nineteenth century shabtis were discovered in various Greek and Roman settlements in the European, North African and Near Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. Most of these shabtis were only mentioned in various scholarly publications in the context of the diffusion of Isaic cults, and since then put on the side or they became completely forgotten. Until now such shabtis have not been classified or systematically studied. In many cases they were classified as “fakes” which are, in my opinion, definitely not. Prof. dr. Schneider in 1977 wrote one of the last great studies of the shabtis, in which he stated that such artefacts really need to be analyzed and he also expressed the importance of their complete typology (vol. I, pp. 346-349). I have been studying such artefacts since 1996 and in this presentation I would like to express their value and the importance for the completely new study of such artefacts. Mine presentation will include the preview of the new typological study of shabtis from the museum collections in Central and Southeast Europe. Proposed typology, based on the study of shabtis from various museum and private collections, classify shabtis according their form, decorations, headdress, implements, text and position of text, and material from which they were crafted (stone, pottery, glass, faience, wood etc.). Author also would like to address various problems relating with their provenance and previous dating. In the near future I will try to raise some funds and to start the completely new project which will include the study of all shabtis which were discovered around the Roman Empire and which were now in possession of various European museums.
