Sažetak
Background Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is produced by both plants and animals which appear to have evolved mechanisms to use it in cell signalling. In animals H2S has an effect on vascular tone, and been implicated in the onset of diseases. H2S regulates plant stomatal apertures and stress responses and is often generated along with nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide, so an understanding of the role of H2S must take such interactions into account. H2S may also modify protein thiol groups, as can NO and ROS. Therefore a competition is likely between H2S and other reactive compounds, with different responses being the final outcome. Methods Commonly studies use H2S donors, such as NaHS or Na2S, but recently H2S donors that supply H2S in a more physiologically relevant way have been developed, such as GYY4137. The effects of such novel compounds on plant and animal physiology, e.g. Caenorhabditis elegans, are being explored. Results H2S treatment increases plant stomatal apertures and affects antioxidant levels. The toxicity of H2S on C. elegans has been assessed and its effects on protein expression and modification are being investigated. Conclusion Such Work will lead to a better understanding of how H2S fits into cell signalling events in a range of organisms and will enable the development of new compounds that can modify cell function. In the future H2S donors may be used therapeutically, or to facilitate improved crop production.
