Predrag Pale - Systems and Signals Department, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Zagreb Sonja Bezjak - University Computing Center, University of Zagreb None of the available directory services succeeded in covering a larger community while attracting individual members to supply and maintain their personal data in a prompt and willing way. In the same time, the pace of the proliferation of the information technology and the growth of the user base, position the service of locating people among the tasks with the highest priorities. Therefore a new service GoPIS (Gopher based Personal Identification Service) has been designed. It is aimed at putting users in charge of their data while making it very easy to implement and acquire the initial data about users by the leverage of existing, widely used network services: Gopher, WAIS, Jugehead and Veronica. Introduction The spread and implementation of information technologies and the growth of user base generate the huge demand for directory services. These services should make it easy to locate a person or multiple persons not only by name or their affiliation but also on the basis of numerous attributes like research interest, project results, hobbies or alike. Thus we would like to be able to locate a "known person" as well as a "unknown person". In the same time, the process of presenting personal data should be easy, intuitive and straightforward, not requiring special knowledge or obeying complicated rules or structures. It should be more like free style informal biography. Implementation of such a service should not require a large number of specialists for this service in order to cover a larger and heterogeneous service. Existing services The services available today, like WHOIS, X.500, finger, netfind, CSO have number of interesting ideas behind them and are providing service. However, they all fail in the present problem. If their data format is easy to implement, search capabilities and broad coverage are at stake. If designed as trully distributed and global service, they are not suitable for common user to maintain the data and do not allow free format. The most important problem of all of them being low success in attracting users to supply the data. GoPIS Proposed new service has simplicity as the main koncept. It should be simple enough for a user to supply and maintain its own data. Simultaneously is should be simple to link all such individual data on the organizational level and make them available for search and display. Thus, the proposal is to define standard directory ".identity" in the users HOME directory. Everything found within the directory is owners personal data. The owner has the right (and a duty in some organizations) to enter any data. st.A UY'5z (UWY#%'57vxzM > authorsabstract podnaslov&F * 1 S Tms Rmn `Symbol HelvTimes New Roman ArialTimes New Roman CETimes New Roman CyrTimes New Roman GreekTimes New Roman TurTimes New Roman (Hebrew)Times New Roman (Arabic)Times New Roman Baltic Arial CE Arial Cyr Arial Greek Arial Tur Arial (Hebrew) Arial (Arabic) Arial Baltic" [ [9 (GoPIS Predrag Pale Predrag Pale
