Sažetak
Roads and railways are always limited in the amount of allowed settlement. When soil reinforcement is used in these structures several positive effects can be achieved, including reduction of settlement and increased bearing capacity. However, the methods of testing that would offer evidence of soil improvement are difficult to perform in situ, and so far have shown limited confidence in rating rein- forcement effects. These methods should preferably be known in regular road construction practice and should be capable of reflecting presence and positive effects of soil reinforcement. The static plate load test is in common use for determination of soil vertical modulus and it seems to satisfy the mentioned requirements. This article describes the model testing that was performed on both unreinforced and reinforced natural rounded gravel. The plate load test was used to verify whether this test can give evidence of improvement of soil reinforced by geogrids. Variations in test procedures, soil layer thickness and stiffness above and below reinforced section, geogrid type, and method of soil compaction regarding detection of reinforcing effects were analyzed. The tests were performed in the laboratory, in a modified metal big pullout apparatus box. It was shown that triangular opening grids had better improvement than square opening grids. Improvement achieved due to reinforcement was higher when soft soil was foundation soil for reinforced layer, and apparently Ev1 was more sensitive to that improvement then Ev2. Recommendations for use of static plate load test in determining soil stiffness improvement and suggestions for further research in this area are given.
