Sažetak
What might be the consequences to aquatic organisms of low levels of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs)in the aquatic environment? One possibility is interference with efflux transporters, which protect aquatic organism from a wide variety of potentially toxic substances. These transporters act to efflux putative toxicants out of cell and organism. In this article wew review the properties of these transporters as regards substrate specificity and substrate affinity, protective role, and the modulation of activity by pharmaceutical products. We conclude that although PPCPs copuld potentially modulate these transporters, it is unclear whether this modulation can occur at the low PPCP levels present in the environment. Work on this question is urgently needed, and we suggested directions for this research
