Sažetak
It is highly accepted that success on a sentence repetition task gives a good insight into a children’s language knowledge and that it is one of the best diagnostic markers of language impairment and language processing deficits. The aim of this study was to explore the similarities and differences in sentence repetition skills between the group of subjects with normal language development (NLD), specific language impairment (SLI) and the group of subjects with language impairment of neurological origin (LIN). Subjects were 3 groups of primary school children aged from 7 ; 03 to 9 ; 10 years matched by age and gender. They were all of at least average IQ, without sensory and motoric deficits. All of the subjects with language impairment were included in the neurological follow up since the early age. To determine neurological status detailed neurological examination, which also included EEG recording, was applied. This study is part of the more extended research in which different language skills of the same groups of subject were assessed. All of the subjects were tested with a set of sentences of increased length and semantic and syntactic complexity. Repetition accuracy was analyzed with respect to the type and number of semantic and grammatical errors. Results have shown clear statistical differences between the NLD group vs. SLI and LIN, with NLD group being highly successful compared to the other groups. There were no statistical differences between the results of SLI and LIN group which lead us to several possible explanations. One is that when phonological working memory skills are affected the manifestations of deficits are similar regardless of the etiology, and the other is that undetected neurological background may be present in children with SLI even though it is not detected by classical NRL exam and EEG recordings. Additional alternative explanations will also be discussed.
