Sažetak
Introduction Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor and the leading cause of death from malignancy in women. In female, the prevalence of breast cancer is 100-fold that in male population. Data of the Cancer Registry kept at the National Institute of Public Health show the incidence and mortality of breast cancer in Croatia to be on a steady increase over the last two decades, rising with age. In women aged 40-50, the mortality from breast cancer exceeds the cumulative mortality from all other causes. Some 1400 new cases of breast cancer are detected per year, with a tendency of constant increase, as also reported from all over the world. Aim The aim of the study was to estimate the magnitude of the issue of breast cancer at the level of primary health care. The disease is recorded at this level, whereas the treatment is continued at the polyclinic-consultation and hospital level. Methods Analytical methods were employed to assess the rate of breast cancer in the all-cancer morbidity in the City of Zagreb, and to compare it with the data for Croatia as a whole. Results The number of newly recorded cases of breast cancer in Zagreb ranged from 400 to over 600, accounting for 26% of all cancer localizations. The City of Zagreb accounted for 23% of overall breast cancer cases in Croatia. The incidence of breast cancer ranged from 97.1 to 164.0 newly detected cases, and overall incidence of all cancer localizations from 431.9 to 581.0 per 100, 000 inhabitants. The incidence of breast cancer in Zagreb exceeded that in Croatia as a whole. Conclusion Primary health care physicians should be properly educated in the early detection of breast cancer in women presenting with initial symptoms, and in competent referral of these patients to higher levels of health care.
