Sažetak
The research of religious polemics between the Eastern and Western Church emerged from the study of Croatian popular sermons from the 18th and 19th century. In his book published in 1780 Antun Kanizlic shows that Focius, the Eastern Church's Patriarch, was the main originator of the Church schism, and pictures him as negative saint. The motif of Faust appears at the very root of the Church schism (1054) ; a Jew as an enemy of Christianity plays Mephisto's role: he presents Focius with knowledge and wisdom.
