Sažetak
In the Mediterranean Sea recently have been reported some calanoid copepod species belonging to hyperbethic, bentho-pelagic community, as evidenced by the fact that the Mediterranean area is the site of active speciation events. Currently, the familly Mesaiokeratidae comprises 9 small hyperbenthic species, found in shallow to deep coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas. Mesaiokeras hurei from the seawater lake Veliko Jezero on the Island of Mljet (South Adriatic Sea) is the only representative of this family reported from the Mediterranean Sea. Our study aimed to give better insight of the population ecology of this small calanoid species (total length 310-370 µm). Material was collected monthly from the bottom layers at the deepest part of the lake (46 m) with Nansen zooplankton net (125 µm mesh size) and Niskin bottles (depth 20m, 25m, 30m, 35m, 40m), in four time periods during 2001, 2008, 2011 and 2013. The vertical population distribution showed highest preference for the bottom layers (35 and 40m). Adults of M. hurei were found in range of temperature from 10.5°C to 18.3°C, salinity from 37 to 38.4 and oxygen from 1.2 ml/L to 5.9 ml/L. The stock size of M. hurei showed a large variability over the study period with generally increasing population. It is characterized by bimodal annual density dynamics with the maxima of 1971 ind.m-3 recorded in November 2001 when M. hurei contribute up to 36% of the total copepods numbers in the layer below 20 m depth. Specific hydrographic conditions prevailing in the bottom of the study site enabled specialization and niche separation of this species probably in order to minimalize or avoid competition between co-occurring species. Furthermore, toward better understanding taxonomical position and highlight the geological evolution, phylogenetic analysis of the species is in progress.
