Sažetak
Granulation is a powerful technique for producing “engineered particles”, that is particulate systems with strictly defined properties to meet specific end use requirements. Using such physical conversion of powder substance benefits in many ways: eliminating dust handling hazards or losses, improving flow properties for further processing, controlling dispersion and solubility, building non-segregating powder blends etc. That’s why granulation is inevitable process step in many industry domains. Although granulation stands as recognizable engineering discipline for the last twenty five years, empirism still prevails in numerous granulation studies. This is largely due to complex physical perspective of granulation phenomenon and inability of users for visual inspecting transformations of powder substance in granulation unit. In order to achieve high competitiveness on dynamic and highly demanding markets, we have to marginalize routed empirism and to necessarily apply multiscale approach in granulation studies. Analyzing granulation process by using multiscale approach implies understanding of granulation phenomenon on each scale (from entity to process unit) and quantification of inhered interrelations at meso-scale of the process. This presentation will reveal the meso-scale study of wet granulation process for various particulate systems by using the population balance framework. In this presentation, we will provide theoretical review of granulation phenomenon and our vision of understanding granulation process in a way that chemical engineering paradigm developed over 50 years ago for the description of chemical reactors. Within this lecture, we shall present high shear and fluid bed granulation as potential process technologies for formulation of dolomite agricultural substance and for preparation of a new formulation of TiO2 photocatalyst. Study of the processes will be focused towards detection of process and formulation properties that will synergically drive complex microscale events in a proper way and therewith result in a collective of stable enlarged entities, granules that will retain its high agricultural and photocatalytic activity. In addition, our intention here will be to present the effect of some process variables on the property of gained group of entities, particle size distribution (PSD). Presentation will also refer to process modelling by using mechanistic approach via population balance. Thus, kinetic of inherent physical conversion of various particulate systems will be quantitatively revealed.
