Sažetak
Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI), from global, regional, national, local to corporate level have to develop a system of metadata. The metadata are defining catalogue that is basis of the SDI. Metadata elements and defined considering SDI’s functionality. Spatial data themes and spatial data included in SDI should fulfil needs of dominant SDI users. The role of metadata is to describe spatial data and enable users to discover, view, download and use the spatial data. Metadata have one of the fundamental role in the establishment, development and maintenance of the SDI. SDI stakeholders use spatial data for various purposes, in various working processes and in various business and financial models. Metadata must satisfy, in addition to the basic SDI functionalities, also the specific user needs ; e.g. easier specialized management of spatial resources. With the introduction of new SDIs, there is a more needs to connect them to ensure interoperability of spatial data. Metadata harvesting is needs to connect the metadata between SDIs. However, to ensure interoperability between more SDIs, sematic relations should be ensured. Metadata have the fundamental role of linking the SDIs and interoperability of spatial data.
