Sažetak
Scientists as well as common people agree that pain is a very complex experience, which includes cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components. In our study we analyzed pain perception in the case of patients with injuries of the peripheral nervous system from the war in Croatia. All lesions were verified by EMNG diagnostic. We assessed pain experience shortly after trauma and about 10 years after medical treatment and rehabilitation, when we also assessed quality of life. The study included 109 patients (99 men an 10 women), mean age 41.85 +/- 9.06 years. For the assessment of pain perception we used the short form of the McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), and a Coop-Wonca chart for the quality of life. The results show a high intensity of pain perception in both examinations, but significantly higher in the first situation (after the trauma) than about 10 years, later, especially in sensory description as well as total score, and on the Visual analog scale (VAS). There was no difference between men and women in the assessment of pain perception. Results of the Coop-Wonca charts show moderate to severe difficulties in physical, daily and social activities, and emotions. General health was mostly assessed as severely damaged, and pain as moderately high. Most of the patients registered no changes in their health situation lately. Our study emphasizes again the importance of the psychological component in pain perception.
