Sažetak
Meteosat Third Generation satellites (MTG) will carry a new instrument onboard – an infrared sounder (IRS). Similar type of instrument, providing hyperspectral soundings of the atmosphere, is presently used onboard polar- orbiting satellites (e.g. METOP). However, the resolution of these data is quite different then the one expected from an instrument onboard geostationary satellite. For example, IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) instrument provides satellite- based vertical profiles only every 12 hours for particular pixel. This sparse temporal resolution is the biggest obstacle for utilisation of present hyperspectral data for nowcasting purposes. IRS products will provide possibility to track spatial and temporal changes in the atmospheric stability with much better temporal resolution and spatial coverage than the polar satellites. In this study temperature and humidity vertical profiles are analysed for days with convective activity based on IASI data onboard Metop polar satellite. An analysis is performed for a broader Adriatic region, including Croatia, Slovenia and northern Italy, during 2012 and 2013. It is expected that IRS data will be comparable to IASI data ; therefore IASI is used to demonstrate capabilities of IRS sounder in improvement of nowcasting of severe convective activity, which is one of the most challenging tasks for operational forecasters.
