Sažetak
Analysis is given of the basic factors determining the water resources on the islands: climate, orografhic, hydrografic and hydrogeological properties. As regards water resources, the islands are specific case; their water resources consist of salt and fresh water. The natural water input to the islands comes from the atmosphere, and outflow ends in the coastal sea. Croatian islands are very short of water suitable for use. Like in other parts of Croatia, the required level of water supply has not been achieved on the islands either. Underdevelopment of water supply on the islands should be solved systematically in order to attain the essential conditions for harmonious development of the islands and for the adequate meeting of water requirements. Within the frammework of the Strategy of Development of Water Supply in the Republic of Croatia, the Programme of Water Supply to the Islands has been defined. The objective of the Programme is to provide secure and, in accordance wizh the usual standards, adequate supply of drinking water. The Programme respects the principles of management of islands development and fits into the water management plans. Water management plans consist of defining and analysis of available water resources, anlysis and forecasting of water requirements, water protection from pollution, protection against adverse effects of water, and formulating of alternative solutions. Such planning will help to achieve sustainable development and joint management of development and the environment.
