Sažetak
The main goal of this work was to represent and adequately explain the semantic changes which occurred in the Middle English period in the words of French origin, which have been incorporated in the Middle English period. The corpus of forty eight words was analysed on a semantic level, demonstrating how French loanwords relating to government formed their meaning during the integration into English. The semantic classification was based on work by Rudolf Filipović which differentiates three adaptation types: zero extension, restriction of meaning and expansion of meaning. Out of forty eight analysed words, five examples of pejoration, four examples of metaphor and only two of metonymy were found.
