Sažetak
From the perspective of younger generations old age is not only terra incognita but also a phase in human life labeled by many stereotypes, prejudices, fears and taboos. Ageing is an extremely complex phenomenon in which biological and cultural processes are interwoven. Also, ageing is universal human experience which is coded and constructed in different ways in different cultural contexts. Inspired by the sociologist Jaber Gubrium who emphasized the importance of subjectivity and lived experience of ageing expressed through (life) narratives, words and artistic expressions (for example poetry) of older people (Gubrium, 1993), the paper presents and analyses subjective experiences of old age and reflections about „the good old age“ as revealed by the female and male inmates from the old people's homes in Zagreb and Split. What is old age from their point of view? How do these people cope with their own ageing? How do they interpret their (personal) ageing? What meanings do they ascribe to it? Are there any differences between ageing experiences of women and men? Is „the good old age“ an oxymoron or is it possible though (Fry et all, 1997)? Seen through the prism of self-interpretations of elderly people, old age is shown as a process in which one's personal experience and relation towards ageing and old age are perceived and interpreted always in concrete (personal and social) context.
