Sažetak
Results of exploration show that water supply in Međimurje County (Croatia) has always been based on the use of subsurface water resources. In the past, only single and dug, rarely drilled, wells and springs were used. In1960, only the central part of Čakovec had organized public water supply. Today, groundwater is drawn from wells drilled for the regional water pumping stations in Nedelišće and Prelog and not deeper than 35 metres. Until the end of 1994, 711 kilometres of public water supply pipelines were built bringing potable water to 93 out of 125 inhabited places. Sixty-five percent of households and nearly all industrial and non-industrial companies have public water supply. The total amount of potable water used is 4.5 • 106 cubic metres. The renewable quantities of groundwater in the alluvial deposits of the Drava River are manifoldly larger. Based on the proposed annual development of water supplying pipelines of 50 kilometres the provision of potable water to the remainder of the inhabited places in Međimurje is planned until the year 2000. Based on figures showing public water supply, particularly in rural areas, it can be concluded that the Međimurje County has reached the state of water supply in the regions having high standards of living.
