Sažetak
The testing and modelling of civil engineering structures at the Department of Engineering Mechanics dates back to the 1920s, when the world-renowned scientist Stjepan Timošenko Prokofjevič came to Zagreb. He gaining employment at the Faculty of Engineering in Zagreb, where in the same year he founded the Department of Materials Testing, from which evolved today's Department of Engineering Mechanics. He taught Strength of Materials, Materials Testing, and special topics from Engineering Mechanics and Structural Analysis. His two-year stay in Zagreb has left an indelible mark, especially in the area of testing and numerical modelling of building structures. Everyone in the world knows how much Professor Timošenko contributed to the development of engineering mechanics, and in scientific circles was named “the father of engineering mechanics." He was involved in both testing and numerical modelling of structures at a very high scientific level. He truly spurred the acceptance and development of testing and modelling of structures, even after he had departed from our midst. Today, the Department of Engineering Mechanics, having a deep respect for its founder, continues to cultivate scientific disciplines in experimental and numerical modelling of structures. This paper presents some of the more important scientific research conducted at the Department of Engineering Mechanics over the last twenty years, relating to analytical, numerical and experimental modelling of structures. The paper is divided into four thematic sections according to research areas.
