Sažetak
Early childhood caries (ECC) represents serious dental and social problem. Although improper bottle-feeding with sweetened liquids represents the main cause, the behavioural aspects seems to play an important role in the aetiology of ECC. Objectives:The aim of this study was to analyse the role of feeding habit and parenting practice in affected children. The sample comprised 72 children with ECC (mean age of 3.5 years). Methods:Patients' mothers completed questionnaire on nursing and parenting practice of their children. The obtained data for children with ECC were compared with analogous for the 53 caries-free children. Results: The bottle feeding in bed in ECC children was significantly more frequent (in 99 %) than in caries-free children (only in 6%) (P<0.001). Weaning from the bottle during first year of life in caries-free children was established in 42%, and only in 3% of cases in children with ECC (P<0.001). Parents brushed the child's teeth in 75% of caries-fre cases and only in 32% of children with ECC (P<0.01). Mother's employment seems to be important factor in the aetiology of ECC. Dayly care of caries-free children was accomplished by the mothers in 34% of the cases, and only in 13% of children with ECC (P<0.01). Significantly more children with ECC attended day-care institutions (36%) than caries-free children (13%) (P<0.01). Parental assistance in bottle feeding was established in 92% of caries-free children, and only in 3% of children with ECC (P<0.001). Assistance in bottle feeding and tooth cleaning to the child indicates differences in mother-child interactions between mothers of ECC and caries-free children. Conclusions: The obtained results show that along with feeding pattern the important role in etiology of ECC play the age at which the child was weaned from the bottle, parental assistance in child's toothbrushing, mother's employment, day-care of the child, and mother-child interaction.
