Sažetak
Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a combination of medical disorders that, when occurring together, increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Its prevalence has increased and it has become a significant public health issue around the world. The definition of MS varies among different organisations. The consensus has been made among the two most influential definitions (IDF and NCEP/ATPIII), and the diagnosis of MS could be established if any three of five factors were present ; these are abdominal obesity measured as waist circumference, elevated triglycerides, reduced HDL-C, elevated blood pressure, and elevated fasting glucose. Management of MS focuses on recognizing patients with MS and introducing measures to decrease their risk factors. Primary recommendations are lifestyle changes (healthy diet and physical activity), but pharmacology treatment (i.e. antihypertensive, antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic) for specific condition is indicated if lifestyle changes were not effective and did not result in the recommended goals. The role of the pharmacist is very important in identifying patients with MS, educating patients about lifestyle changes, monitoring the progress and referral to other healthcare providers, if needed.
