Sažetak
Apical periodontitis is an oral disease induced by micro-organisms in the root canal system, which are grouped in complex communities called biofilms and attached to the intracanal walls. The aim of the root canal treatment is to disrupt biofilms and eliminate viable bacteria in order to induce the periapical tissue healing. Instruments used to prep are the root canal can not touch the complete root canal wall due to the complex anatomy of the root canal system. Furthermore, conventional irrigation techniques using different disinfecting solutions are not efficient enough to provide complete bacteria eradication. Therefore, there is need for the inclusion of new antimicrobial strategies in the conventional endodontic treatment. Over the last years, high-power lasers and photodynamic therapy (PDT) have been evaluated, and reported as being highly effective in elimination of mono- and multi-species endodontic biofilms. In the lecture, new laser assisted approaches in disrupting intracanal biofilms will be presented, as well as the results of the newest in vitro and in vivo studies.
