Sažetak
Normal brain functioning is characterized by the balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) acts as the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain and is found throughout the central nervous system. Ionotropic GABA-A/C and metabotropic GABA-B receptors that mediate effects of GABA are also extensively distributed in the brain. GABA affects numerous physiological processes. This review will briefly summarize some of the major functions of GABA, including the role of GABA in development and brain masculinization, and effects of GABA on circadian rhythms, sleep, feeding, aggressive behavior, and learning and memory, mostly deduced from the studies using GABA receptor agonists and antagonists.
