Sažetak
Heart rate (HR) monitoring during exercise is used in horses and athletes to predict performance, energy expenditure and functionality of the cardiovascular system. In order to design training programs it is necessary to establish individual HR values such as baseline HR, HR range, maximal HR and anaerobic threshold. The objective of this experiment was to determine physiological heart rate response in a competitive agility dog. Modified Conconi test was applied on a healthy 2 year old female agility Border Collie. Progressive incremental exercise on a motorized treadmill consisted of 0, 5 km/h speed increments every 30s starting from 5km/h. Rectal temperature was measured before and after the exercise while HR was monitored continuously (POLAR® RS800CX, Polar Electro Oy, Finland). Maximal heart rate was determined at the moment of exhaustion (loss of coordination during exercise). Baseline HR for this subject was 90 beats per minute (bpm) and maximal HR 234 bpm. The linear relationship between running speed and heart rate (v/HR) was analyzed in order to detect a deflection point, termed “the anaerobic threshold”. The deflection represents a transition from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism. Heart rate deflection point (HRdp) was determined at 203 bpm using subjective analysis by three independent experts. The HRdp of the tested subject corresponded to 86% of maximal heart rate. The use of heart rate parameters is yet to be standardized for performance testing in sport dogs.
