Sažetak
In a recently published article the author thorougly analysed family relationships and family structure in Roman Liburnia, using Latin funeral inscriptions from the first three centuries A.D. (A. KURILIĆ, Obitelj u ranorimskoj Liburniji, RFFZd, 34(21), Zadar, 1994/95 (1995), 47-83.). In it she followed the methodology developed by R. P. Saller and B. D. Shaw (Tombstones and Roman Family Relations in the Principate: Civilians, Soldiers and Slaves, JRS, 74, 1984, 124-156.), in order to achieve methodologically correct basis for comparison with the results Saller and Shaw got for the Western regions of Roman Empire. Such an analysis showed that in the early-Roman Liburnia the dominant family type was the nuclear one (what corresponds with the situation in the other analysed regions) and not the extended one as some of the earlier scholars belived. In this paper the author deals upon the family relationships in a narrow circle of Liburnian so-called upper classes, that is, economically and socially distinguished Liburnian families. Although in this class also dominated the nuclear family type, relationships between extended family members appear more often then in the lower classes. The distinguished families, both Liburnian and settlers, tended to keep their privileges inside their own class. One of the ways of doing it was to choose adequate marriage partners for the family's offsprings in order to strenghten its own economic, social and political position. OCTAVII from Nedinum (Nadin) as well as TREBII and RAECII from Iader (Zadar), give good examples of such a practice.
