Sažetak
Adequate supply of potable water is a crucial problem our civilisation is faced with, either because sources of water are insufficient or because many have already been polluted. Hence the supply has to be planned and managed carefully, taking into account present needs, development of the region, sources and quality of water, desired quality of potable water and current purification methods. Given this multitude of factors, it is unlikely that an optimum decision regarding the selection of the most appropriate distribution of sources, location of water collectors and purification methods can be arrived at by intuition or guesswork. Instead, one should use a combination of environmental analyses, subsequent syntheses and validation prior to making a decision and prior to building a system. The process of simulation modelling provides techniques that allow finding many likely solutions in advance suo that the optimum one can be chosen to suit community needs and minimise the cost-benefit ratio. This paper presents an example of simulation modelling developed to propose an alternative to the present water purification modelling developed to propose an alternative to the present water purification system. At present, groundwater is used as the source of potable water for the city of Varaždin, but the concentration of nitrates in potable water exceeds the maximum allowable value. In the alternative proposal, water from the River Drava is to be used and purified.
