Sažetak
Profanity is a kind of linguistic performance present in every language and it can be argued whether there is an individual who has not uttered a single swearword in a lifetime. The study of swearing has long been a neglected research area and it was not until 1960s that the interest in it slowly started to increase. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to offer a better insight into etymology of British and American swearwords by determining their ancestral form, language of origin and earliest known use where possible. The corpus of fifty-six swearwords, out of which twenty-five have been randomly chosen for a more detailed analysis, was based on the five-part scale of offence created by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The corpus is divided into three categories, following typology of swearing proposed by Battistella (2005).
